Inspired by the human connection, the story of life and love, I'm drawn to beauty in mundane moments and everyday heroes casually going about their lives.

Portrait of Darkness & Light
A Portrait of Adleigh
Charcoal & Mixed Media on Toned Paper, 11 x 13 in., 2021
As I spent more time at home during the pandemic, I found myself captivated by the beauty and strength of my children. The teenage years are undeniably complicated. I cannot imagine navigating the turbulent waters of our times within that transition - processing the loneliness of isolation, the home, and online schooling, the deaths of loved ones, and the looming threat of illness, all while witnessing the polarization of our nation. The resilience of our youth is beautiful.

It's Complicated...
A Portrait of Joseph Nicholas
Charcoal & Mixed Media on Toned Paper, 18 x 22 in., 2022
Though the viewer cannot hear him speak, Nick softly shakes his head and whispers between each long and painful drag, "It's Complicated..." Behind the scenes, I created this work in response to the tragic and sudden death of a parent. As my family and I set about the long, painful road of processing grief, the work reminds me there is beauty even in tragedy. As Joseph Nicholas stands there in his weathered US flag t-shirt, I am reminded that so many are staring off into their very uncertain future, quietly shaking their heads, and whispering to themselves, "It's complicated..." Suddenly, I remember I am not alone.

Watching & Waiting
A Portrait of Rita Reasons
Charcoal & Mixed Media on Toned Paper, 14 x 22 in., 2020
This portrait of Rita Reasons was created in 2020, at a time when so many of us were holding our breath, watching, and waiting...
There are people in this world who give more than they take. Rita, working tirelessly with little more than a handful of teenage volunteers, rescues and rehabilitates, saving the lives of countless horses. Each of these neglected and malnourished souls has a story - Rita takes time to know it and call them all by name. I spent an afternoon with Rita on the ranch, quietly photographing her for reference images as she went about her chores. From some distance away, I caught her leaning gently on a fence, gazing off into the distance, patiently watching her new arrivals on the ranch. As she stood there, with wisdom and patience I do not have the life experience to understand, I knew this was a moment worth preserving. Rita Reasons is high art.
