It’s Complicated…

Though the viewer cannot hear him speak, Nick softly shakes his head and whispers between each long and painful drag, "It's Complicated..." Behind the scenes, I created this work in response to the tragic and sudden death of a parent. As my family and I set about the long, painful road of processing grief, the work reminds me there is beauty even in tragedy. As Joseph Nicholas stands there in his weathered US flag t-shirt, I am reminded that so many are staring off into their very uncertain future, shaking their heads, and whispering to themselves, "It's complicated..." Suddenly, I remember I am not alone.
